Malik Nejer
A couple of months ago I came across a video on YouTube called “the real reason for Jeddah’s crisis” a very funny and well made animation made by a young man called “Malik Nejer”
Last week I finally got to see Malik and his friends hanging out in a ten minute video they made, basically it was about them having nothing to do and filming it, I liked the part where they were told at some location that they should not film anything with a soul (a belief practiced by ultra orthodox practitioners of many religions, ex 1 and 2) and then he, makes some gestures of utter disbelief and later says it is not like we are in “1985″… That made me feel so old, I remember 1985, my cousins and I had Michael Jackson’s thriller on rewind as we tried to copy all the dance moves
Anyhow, Malik is a self taught graphical designer who has been drawing ever since he was a little boy, according to him he started drawing on walls since he was five, and now he uses a Mac to do all his art. He also has worked for international graphical design companies, and he also picked up English by himself.
Malik is a very talented artist, and has a sense of patriotism that is self evident and also professed through his work, and while many write for change, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a motion picture is worth even more than that as it has the ability to reach a wider audience and leaves little for interpretation since the message is delivered all the way through.
Checkout his channel on YouTube, it contains other works of his.
Malik has been recently interviewed on Alarabiya (the interview is included in his channel) and I think they offered him a job.
My best wishes to you Malik, good job, and good luck.

Hello Qusay …
First of all … thanks for bringing back the good memories of Michael Jackson and all those unfortunate unsuccessful attempts to ‘moon walk’
And you are totally correct; Mr. Malik is a really talented designer. Such bright examples drive you to wonder; how many talented young Saudis are there waiting for a chance to prosper and contribute to the progress of their nation …
Inspiring story … indeed …

Great post! Thanks for introducing us to this talented young man. Cartoons, animated or not, give one greater freedom to state the censored, as does humour generally. There is a lot of potential for effecting change and brightening the process along the way in his efforts.
I really enjoyed both the films which speaks to the visuals! LOL
(actually got a number of Arabic words, but intermittently–the English I understood quite well LOL
).
Luckily for my nephew he is asleep or I would have tested his Thriller dance moves…actually I think we did that a little while ago. Best left to memory.

Thank you Chiara, you should post your nephew’s vid on youtube
I am sure you do not need to know much Arabic to understand the cartoons, and that is the point of cartoons I guess.

Hmmm. As far as I remember I was in the chorus for his last Thriller imitation. Best consigned to oblivion. May catch him hip hop dancing solo for his Youtube debut. LOL
Yes, that is the beauty and protectiveness of cartoons–no need for words or not many. Like the wordless cartoon of the 3 Wise Kings stopped by the Wall from reaching Bethlehem.
I was referring more to the 3 young men hanging out video, but as I reassured my BIL (the highly competitive one) I only understand enough to mess up, unless really stock phrases. Must consult the calendar for the Near Eastern Studies Dept! LOL

(1985!) Now I really feel old!!!
He is a very talented young man. And he has a great personality to compliment his talent.
Thanks a million my dear for the introducing him to us.
