Saudi Archaeology at the Louvre

It has been all over the news, and I have written about Saudi archaeology being a new investment, I personally know that it had one or two false starts 20+ years ago, but it is finally taking off, and where better than Paris and at the Louvre to make a grand entrance into the world of everything ancient.

I do however think that they should’ve invited bloggers to the event, especially ones who are into photography, and of course the ones with names that start with the letter Q, and they should let them checkout the “Arabian routes. Archaeology and History of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” a 624 pages, 600 illustrations, 45 euro limited edition in English and Arabic catalogue which is available only at the Louvre bookshop.

You can check the press release (pdf) with some nice pictures and information and you can also check Chiara’s post on the event with many pictures of the items on display.

  1. Great minds…

I just put up 2 posts with numerous pics, and extensive text in French and what was available in English online:

Routes d’Arabie: Archéologie et histoire du royaume d’Arabie saoudite au Musée du Louvre du 14-07-2010 au 27-09-2010

    and

Roads of Arabia – Archaeology and History of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the Louvre from 07-14-2010 to 09-27-2010

I think this Saudi Ministry of Culture and Antiquities collaboration with the Louvre, begun in 2004, is wonderful for both Saudi and France, and by extension other Arab and Muslim countries. France has a particularly good collection of Islamic Art and a particularly good Islamic Studies programme so the fit is impeccable.

I hope others get to see it in Paris–I suspect I will be visiting from afar this year. :(

    Nice pic and post! :)

    • Ahhhhhh, I was saving it, and I hit publish by mistake, I was going to link to your post in English, because mon français n’est pas très bon:)

So thanks for adding them :)

      • Thank you for the belated link! I know that Google French to English is not so great but someone with a bit of French should give the text a try! Alors vas-y toi! :)

  2. My dear “Q” is going to have his own copy soon looool
