Saudi Arabia One Day on Earth 11-11-11

Husam Alsayed (aka @husam_filmhead) a talented filmmaker and an acquaintance of mine shared on his blog a global event called One Day on Earth, where many filmmakers, no matter what their level of expertise or camera they have can join by filming and submitting short clips of the place on earth they are in, the only catch, it has to be filmed on 11-11-2011, last year it was 10-10-2010.

Husam submitted this wonderful film he took in Yemen, since he was there on 10-10-2010, and this year he is the producer/organizer of Saudi Arabia’s contribution for 11-11-2011.

I thought I would do my part, since both are areas I am passionate about (Saudi and Filmmaking) I have joined the movement and I am letting people know.

So if you are in Saudi, own a camera, think you might add a little flavor to the global nonprofit film, don’t let anything hold you back, join us, all it takes is a short video you can take with your phone nowadays and a submission to the group.

Let us show the world what we want them to see.

One Day on Earth – Saudi Arabia

Husam’s Profile on One Day on Earth (so you can add him)

And if you want to, you can add me also :)

If you are not in Saudi, you can also film anything wherever you are, and submit it… what have you got to lose?

Saudi Short Film – Monopoly

Just as I was taking about my recent struggles with employment (I read somewhere that between 2005 and 2009 2.2 million jobs were created in the Saudi private sector, only 9% of them went to Saudis, but I cannot find the source now) a movie director named Badr Alhumood, made a mockumentary about the situation of employment and housing. I liked it, but the presence of an “economic writer” (that is what the description of Esam Alzmil was) in a film like this ruins the flow and the sequence of the scenes.

I liked the part where a Saudi coach has to go to Brazil and lives in the favelas to run away from high home prices

I also liked the part where the land one of the guys received was in the middle of the sea, in a district called Venice -BAs you might have known, I am a supporter and a follower of these movie making initiatives… I just can’t help it.

Video: Jeddah Help Volunteers in Action

A couple of months ago I volunteered with the Jeddah help initiative to provide relief to the poor areas of Jeddah which were hit badly due to the flash flooding which happened around the end of January 2011.

Here is a short video of the people living in those areas, their homes, and the guys in action delivering the food and other things.

It was a great experience, I met some of Jeddah’s finest people who I am extremely proud to know.

Video: SandStorm Hits Kuwait and Saudi

Yesterday a sandstorm hit Kuwait and Saudi, schools were closed in Riyadh because of it. A few guys from Kuwait took this video of the sandstorm coming their way, and it looks like a scene out of The Mummy movie, art imitates life this time.
